The home of Rehearsal the App
NEW – SCRIBBLE IS HERE! You asked for the ability to write directly on your scripts, and now, you can. Update your app to version 1.2, and explore the new, leaner, more efficient toolbar at the bottom of your Rehearsal window. Then, give us feedback below!
Welcome to the home of a brand new iPhone and iPad application for actors and other production professionals called Rehearsal.
What is Rehearsal? A fantastic and effective new way to learn your lines, explore your character’s nuances, prepare for your shoot or stage performance, record continuity notes or plan shots, and submit VO auditions and more – and carry all of that work around with you on the devices you love, your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
Watch this video: a step by step walk through of how Rehearsal is used in a typical scene rehearsal scenario.

I had just moved house and was living out of boxes, and had no broadband as it was yet to be connected. So of course that is when I get a phone call from a commercial radio producer asking if I would do a quick voice test for a series of radio ads for a UK national travel agent. I recorded some sample reads on my home studio (after unpacking it – I had literally just moved) and then put the file on a memory stick and trooped off with my netbook to a nearby cafe to use their wifi – but technology conspired against me in so many ways that two hours later the producer still did not have my audition in his in-box. And then I remembered the Rehearsal app on my iphone. So I emailed the script to the app, and read it into the iPhone and sent it off – and 20 mins later he rang up to say that the client had approved my voice. This gave me enough time to get my iPhone approved as a tethering connection so that the following day I could record the ads in my studio and email them off, but without the Rehearsal app I would not have got the gig in the first place. And after all the kerfuffle and stress of trying to do things the “normal” way – it was so easy to just speak and email!
Having used it successfully for a voice audition I now have absolute confidence that if I am asked for a voice test again, then that is how I will do it, wherever I am at the time.

Loving the app. I have had a succession of big auditions and lots of text to learn in a short period of time. The app helped me tremendously! It also helps me focus in the waiting room – just drilling the scenes over and over. As a result I felt confident and fully prepared – booked both my gigs. In Plain Sight and the new ABC series Scoundrels. Going to use it to prepare for both shoots as well.

I am very pleased with the results of using ‘Rehearsal’ so far. It is a powerful tool in preparing for auditions, or for days of work, especially when I am pressed for time. It is easy to use and I have no doubt that as it evolves, it will be a part of my work process for a long time.

Just so you know, I used Rehearsal for a short workshop scene that I had to do on Saturday. I was teching a show all week and barely had any time to rehearse the script aside from listening to it in the Rehearsal app and looking at the words on my iPhone in between tech stuff. Well, you’re program is pretty cool, because I learned my lines very easily and even though I felt like I’d barely done anything to prepare for the workshop the CD commented, “That was lovely and wonderful! I don’t need to re-direct you.” I guess all the “little bits of time” added up and Rehearsal helped me keep the script handy for all those “little bits of time.”

By using this app I was able to study my lines before I got on stage to perfom. I was driving to Birmingham, AL and on the way to my show I was able to study while driving by playing back the sene. This app so worth having and I am glad I have it. I am a upcoming actor and the rehearsal app is the way to go for even the new actors that are just starting.

I love my Rehearsal app! I’m a Recording artist and voice over talent. I record on a daily basis and the reazon why I wanted Rehearsal in my I PAD is because I don’t need to use paper! And I love to be green. I figure that I can save a lot of trees and a lot of ink!! When I’m singing or Dubbing I take it with me and I love it for all it can do for me! I will recomend all the studios where I go to get the I pads with this application for everyone that work in that field like me

Have downloaded REHEARSAL for iPhone. Have installed and sent in registration. Waiting three days for response so I can activate. No word yet. Soon?
David…I’ve forwarded your comment to our email team – we’ll get you squared away. You fell in that trap of when Apple put us on the front page (story at the top of this post).
David
I had an inital problem with this app but the help team was quick to fix the problem. Great app and great people. I will recomend this to my friends.
Do you all realize what a freakin’ fabulous thing this is? I am not an actress…I am a PhD student and have been looking for something like this to manage my study notes, help memorize theories (Blackout is genious!), and help me prep and refine for my oral comp exams . You really need to think about the fact that you have a whole other potential market for this app! Love you, love you, love you!
~Loraine
Loraine – thanks for the freakin’ fabulosity. We do hear all the time about how people use Rehearsal for other things than acting: business people giving speeches, makeup and wardrobe taking photos and videos for continuity purposes, and now you and your advanced degree prep. Thank you so much for your kind words. Kinda makes up for the “nothing but a glorified PDF reader/MP3 recorder” comments we get from time to time from the haterz.
I love this app, but it takes two to three minutes to open and I only have one script. Is this normal?
Glad you love rehears, but no, it is not normal, Tom. Can you forward the script to me so we can see what’s going on?
Hi
just downloaded the App ( not an actor ) for use with speeches and delivering lectures etc.
My only concern is who has access to material, ( some contains sensitive content), sent in to your team, are the files removed after downloading?
This being my only gripe I hope this can be addressed.
Best Rgds
Kevan
Kevin, we had the same concern when we created the app – the studios and casting offices that send scripts out to actors are very concerned about leaking future scripts for shows like mine (Heroes).
Not to worry. When anyone forwards a script to their Rehearsal app, it is encrypted the moment it hits our server, then decrypted for use when added to the user’s My Scripts. When a user is finished with a script, and it’s deleted from the My Scripts library, it is also deleted from our servers. We use the strongest encryption we are allowed to use and still market the app overseas.
I hope that’s addressed your concerns.
Hi David
many thanks for the info, I had hoped to get a lot of use out of the program and this answer has cleared the way.
All the best with this venture.

I am a puppeteer and downloaded the app to rehearse for lines and the features within the app are plentiful for my purposes. The blackout feature and touch script controls are very impressive. Look forward to future updates.
Thank you.

Nick!
Glad it’s working out for you! Please let us know if you have any comments or questions here.

I’m looking for a way to get into voice over/narration work. Do you recommend this tool as a necssary one in order to be able to move forward in the world of this type of work? Thanks for any advice on where to begin in voice auditioning!
It’s a tool you can use once you’re in the business, but it’s an option amongst many other more traditional ones. Getting an AT 2020 USB mic and using Audacity is a far more common approach to daily audition work. Having said that, I’ve been submitting a fair percentage of my auditions traditionally and some with Rehearsal, and my agent doesn’t know the difference. I would suggest that taking classes, doing a commercial and narration demo and joining a site like Voice123.com as well as looking for an agent are more important steps than the choice of what equipment to use for your auditions. You’ll certainly need home equipment to perform any jobs that you actually book. You can review demos2gogo.com for more information on the VO business.
Thanks for asking!
I’m using your app on the new iPad.
- will you be adding a way to quickly navigate to any page???? Endless scrolling seems to be the only way.
- You show a nice sample script with notes in the margin etc.., but ther doesn’t seem to be any way to do the same thing. I want a black marker to make notes. How about it?
- if you added a brightness control like the iBook app has, you’d really have something.
Thanks
John
John,
As I was scrolling endlessly through the feature script I’m shooting, I felt the same way, and we’re on the case. We have in the pipeline a new option for notes called Scribble, but it might work just to add a “black highlighter”. And are you really talking about brightness? Or are you talking about contrast. I’ll look at the iBook app more closely to see if I can answer my own question. Thanks for the suggestions, and for grabbing Rehearsal!
I love this app! It is definitely an essential tool for me as I use it for my scene study class, and workshops. I am having a little trouble however. I downloaded a script and saved some scenes. I recently did an update and now those recorded scenes can’t be found and the scripts keep getting turned sideways. Therefore making it impossible to read and rehighlight.
Thoughts? I have also tried to resend and reload the scripts as well.
Admire your work by the way!
Alfred
I appreciate the kind words, Alfred! If you can forward that script to me at davidlawrence@gmail.com, I’ll make sure that Brian takes a look at it to see if there’s an issue with how it was turned into a PDF. I am concerned that a reloading and re-adding of the script didn’t work, since it worked before – but we’ll do our best to get to it.
David
Rehearsal is a smash hit! Congrats and thanks from all us struggling line-learners. I loaded it on the iPad. It worked as described the first time.
Tom
Thanks so much! It would be awesome (to counteract all the kids who download it for free, don’t know what to do with it, trash it and give us one star on the way out the door) if you were to post your sentiments as a review in the App Store. Any users, actually, would be helping us out if they happened to find a few moments to do that.
Two questions,
1: Is it officially in vogue for Heroes actors to go into the app business?
2: Is there a port or something similar available for the Android platform?
1. Yes. Greg Grunberg and I huddled together and decided to take the app world by storm.
2. No, not yet. We haven’t officially determined if this app is a success yet, so until that happens, we’re still looking at other platforms.
Thanks for asking.
David
Hi David,
I’m just trying out your app on my iPad. Great so far. However, I emailed some sides and they look great in previewing them on the Add Scripts section. However, they look “fuzzy” when I add them in to My Scripts. Just a tad. Enough for me to notice. Any ideas as to why this is?
Secondly, I’d love to be able to type notes directly onto the PDFs and not have a small box where my notes are hidden away. Would this feature be added soon? Thanks.
Mike
The fuzziness has to do with the dots-per-inch that your PDF was scanned at or made from. Yes, the Scribble feature is coming – and we’re very excited about it – it’s the most requested feature we have.
Thanks for giving Rehearsal an audition!
David
So even though the PDFs look good when previewing within the app in the Add Scripts section, there’s nothing to be done about the fuzziness when viewed in the app in the My Scripts? Shame. The PDFs look fine on my desktop and print up fine too. I can live with the fuzziness of course, just was hoping the issue wasn’t on my end. Can I email someone the PDF sides and get verification that it’s the sides?
Can’t wait for the Scribble!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make an Android app!
